Leveraging HCD to build the next generation of companies
We are a business incubator at The Indian School of Business. We leverage an immersive and transformative Human-Centered Design (HCD) process to build the next generation of companies.
This incubator has been set up by the Indian School of Business (ISB) with the objective of strengthening entrepreneurship and fostering innovation among the young in India including its student and alumni community. ISB will support the activities of DLabs through its faculty and research expertise by providing guidance, knowledge and mentorship to the entrepreneurs whose ventures are selected for incubation.
The ISB evolved from the need for a world-class business school in Asia. The founders, some of the best minds from the corporate and academic worlds, anticipated the leadership needs of the emerging Asian economies.
Distinguished scholars from India and the world teach at ISB. The faculty is at the forefront of research and provides thought leadership. ISB has academic alliances with the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, London Business School (LBS) and MIT Sloan School of Management and The Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, Tufts University. This association brings in the best of global management practices and thinking into the ISB curriculum.
Over the last several decades, the HCD methodology has contributed to the success of some of the most innovative organizations in the world like IDEO, Nike, P&G, and even Sesame Street. Entrepreneurs are also increasingly recognizing the value in the HCD approach, but often high quality and meaningful Design input is not readily available and/or is prohibitively expensive - especially for startups.
This is a missed opportunity!
For larger organizations, HCD can have an impact but it often gets lost in the larger scheme of things. For start-ups, on the other hand, the impact can be ‘life-altering’ and can help entrepreneurs fail faster and succeed bigger. The approach needs to be different from traditional incubation, requiring deeper and more integrated engagement with entrepreneurs and startups.
That’s our approach!
Although we are sector agnostic, for the first cohort we have chosen to focus on the healthcare sector. We offer one of the most dynamic and intense program in the industry. We start with a transparent engagement model and financing mechanism and then add:
We have built an in-house highly interdisciplinary 'SWAT' team to work in an integrated fashion with entrepreneurs to solve real problems. This 'SWAT' Team works in the trenches along with the entrepreneur and ensures they get the extensive expertise and bandwidth they need.
We have built a network of world class Design Mentors to work with and enhance the startups offerings and enforce a sustained user focus. In addition, we leverage the full power of the ISB network - both industry and academia - to give access to an unparalleled network of Indian and international mentors.
Partnerships with other leading institutions such as Wharton, MIT, and Kellogg enable entrepreneur-exchange programs and provide international exposure. This also provides incubatees a unique perspective when growing and enables the ones targeting international customers to interact with them directly.
We are a team of designers, entrepreneurs and hackers, scientists and engineers. Through our affiliation with ISB, we have access to industry leaders in India and abroad. We believe that only through intense collaboration and teamwork, can one solve the biggest problems in the world.
